PHILOSOPHY / GOALS OF RESIDENCE RULES & REGULATIONS

Staying within any of the residence complex’s can be a very rewarding experience. It is, however, important that you understand there are others staying within the complexes and therefore it is important to be respectful and understanding towards them.

Therefore, the rules and regulations, including the judicial process, are founded on the following principles:

                        - The safety and security of every guest is paramount, and is everyone’s responsibility

                        - Rules and Regulations are designed to be remedial, and are designed to promote, educate and inform everyone of their responsibilities and of the consequences of their actions;

                        - Everyone residing within the residences deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and to have their wellbeing promoted in a positive environment;

                        - All students are encouraged to make positive choices, and accept responsibility for their behavior.

RESPONSIBILITIES

While you are staying within the residence complex, you are expected to respect and show acceptance towards others that are also residing within the residence complexes. This means you are expected to conduct yourself in a manner that respects a high standard of wellbeing. A quiet atmosphere, respecting the need for privacy is necessary, as well as knowing that the decisions you make must take into account the common good of your apartment, floor, building and complex mates.

All guests residing here are expected to familiarize themselves with pertinent federal, provincial, municipal laws, as well as the rules and regulations (including this booklet!) that govern Laurentian University and the Residence Complex. If you require clarification, do so before you risk violating any rules.

Above all, a resident is expected to be proactive. By recognizing and dealing appropriately with a violation of the rules and regulation (which may reasonably include removing yourself from a situation or preventing the situation from escalating).

The following rules and regulations are in place to promote the dignity, well-being, safety and comfort of all guests residing within the Residence Complex.                         3. NOISE

Staying within any of our residence complexes you must respect and understand that there are other guests staying here as well and therefore excessive noise will not be tolerated. Please refrain from playing loud music on the main level especially after dark as there are other guests who may be trying to relax and sleep. You may listen to your music with headphones on or quietly within your room, if it becomes too loud a porter will come and ask you to turn it down. 1am-7am are designated quiet hours and therefore you are not to be making any excessive noise during this time as others staying with us will be trying to sleep. If you are making too much noise a porter will tell you to quiet down and if it persists and/or becomes a problem then further action will be taken in order to ensure that all of our guests have a happy and comfortable stay.

                        4. ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES

The use, possession, and trafficking of any narcotic, controlled substance or illegal drug is covered under Federal law. Furthermore, said use / possession and/or trafficking will NOT be tolerated in or surrounding the Residence Complex. This includes misuse of prescription medication.

                        5. WEAPONS

Weapons are not permitted in the Residence Complex. This includes, but is not limited to large knives, firearms, pellet / B.B. guns, paintball markers, replica weapons, mace, bear spray, martial art weapons, etc.

Any guest found to be in possession of something that reasonably could be used as a weapon will face disciplinary action, and may have the item confiscated by Laurentian Security.

                        6. FIRE SAFETY

Fire safety within the Residence is of highest concern. Various federal, provincial and municipal by-laws dictate rules surrounding fire safety and prevention. Among others, any person can face charges for tampering with, non-maintenance of and otherwise making any safety device inoperable. This includes fire alarms, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Any person violating these rules, or placing any other person in danger due to their negligence or actions, may be asked to leave the Complex. This sanction is over and above the variety of fines and/or charges that could be levied by law.

SMOKE ALARMS No guest may make any alteration or modification to any smoke alarm. This includes covering it in any way or with any item.

EVACUATION Upon discovering a fire in residence, do not place yourself in further danger:

§ Close the door to the area

§ Activate the closest fire alarm pull station

§ Leave the building by the nearest and safest exit

§ Upon hearing a Fire Alarm, you MUST evacuate EVERY TIME!

§ Leave by the nearest exit in an orderly fashion

                        § Do not use elevators

§ The University cannot be responsible for people who ignore a fire alarm. Not only do you potentially risk your life, but also the lives of firefighters who may have to rescue you.

§ If you have an accessibility requirement (differing ability, difficulty waking up) that could affect your ability to evacuate you MUST communicate that requirement to the porter on duty upon arrival.

COOKING

Our residences offer facilities for cooking. If you plan on doing any kind of cooking you must use those facilities, as cooking in your individual bedroom or hallway is not permitted.

Leaving cooking unattended is the leading cause of false alarms. These false alarms require the attendance of the Greater Sudbury Fire Department, which theoretically could endanger lives of people involved in more serious incidents.

Check the cleanliness of the appliance before and after use to ensure that smoke doesn’t result in a false alarm.

The resident is responsible for any cooking-induced fire alarms, including, but not limited to, the responsibility for any charge incurred by the Greater Sudbury Fire Department (this charge may be up to $600).

Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the Residence Complex, near entranceways (as per City By-Laws) or in any common areas (stairways and hallways). Fines by the City of Greater Sudbury could be upward of $1,500 per offence.

                        7. RESIDENCE SECURITY

All residents are expected to contribute to the safety of the Residence Complex. As such, you are expected:

                        - To not allow tailgating (allowing an unknown person into the complex)

-If a porter on duty asks you for identification of any kind you are to provide it to them as their job is to ensure that there is no one within the residence complexes who should not be here.

                        - To report suspicious behaviour to one of the porters on duty.

                        - To keep your door locked and your keys with you at all times.

LOCKS, DOORS, KEYS, CARD ACCESS

Locks and keys are the property of Laurentian University. Unauthorized duplication or use is forbidden. Guests should only have the keys that were issued to them for the duration of your occupancy. Do not lend keys to anyone else.

Perimeter, section doors and elevators are locked from 11pm to 7am. Keep this in mind as a porter will have to let you in and therefore if you do not have a cell phone to reach them it could take a long time depending on which door you exited at the time as the porters will be wandering between six different residence complexes throughout the duration of their shift. Your locked door prevents theft of your personal items. Ensure you bring keys with you.

Lost or stolen keys MUST be reported immediately. A replacement fee of $10 will need to be paid to the porter on duty upon either check out or when you make this aware to them.

Tampering with any lock or alarm device is forbidden. Addition of locks, chains or any device that would obstruct residence staff or the fire department from entering your apartment is not permitted.

ROOM ENTRY

Laurentian University and its agents maintain the right to enter any room for the purpose of dealing with an emergency, urgent repair, cleaning, maintenance, or if a staff member has reasonable grounds to believe that residence rule(s) are being broken, including the possession of a prohibited item, weapon, illegal substance or alcohol.

Submission of a Maintenance Work Order constitutes reasonable permission to enter the room / apartment during normal working hours.

INSURANCE

University insurance does not cover personal possessions of residents, nor does the University assume liability for lost, stolen or damaged items, regardless of how incurred.

Report any suspected security concerns to the porter on duty or Laurentian Security immediately.

MAINTENANCE AND DAMAGES

Any damage done to any part of the Laurentian Residence (washroom, bedroom, apartment, floor, main floor, etc) will not be tolerated. If you notice any serious damage please report it to the porter on duty as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Residence furniture, including beds, is not to be removed from the apartment or rooms.

SOLICITING

Residents are not permitted to operate any business ventures while staying in Residence.

Solicitors are not permitted in the Residence Complex.

Solicitation of any kind, including posters and electronic means of communicating for an event that will include the consumption of alcohol is forbidden, including if the event is held on campus, in residence, or elsewhere.

If you have any questions regarding the rules and regulations of the Laurentian University Residence Complexes please do not hesitate to seek clarification from either a porter or the Conference Services office. While staying with us please abide by all of these rules and regulations so that we can ensure that you as well as the rest of our guests will have a happy and comfortable stay.
